Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened risk of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
