Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
