Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may trigger substance abuse, or risky sexual behavior because of drug abuse could have caused the individual to contract the illness. Individuals who have HIV/AIDS, either because of their drug use or as a pre-existing problem just before their substance abuse problem, typically require treatment services tailor-made to fulfill their specific needs and problems. Many of these challenges are physical in nature, because of the fact that drug users with HIV/AIDS very rarely care for themselves and take the appropriate medications they need to maintain their health. As a result, these individuals arrive to treatment in very poor physical shape and this will have to be handled as a priority while also dealing with other critical issues. Besides the obvious necessity to supply medical services while in rehabilitation, people with HIV/AIDS will also need to address more deeply rooted issues which prompted their alcohol or drug use. Usually, people have situations within their lives which are strictly environmental which may have caused them to turn to alcohol or drugs, like oppressive conditions in their lives or detrimental relationships.
