Sadly, it's true that millions of people decide to drive an automobile while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Doing so not simply puts one's life in danger and puts passengers and others at risk too, but being caught driving while impaired (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will typically bring about serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, fines and even jail time. Quite often somebody who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying drug abuse challenge. The court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders alcohol and drug rehabilitation instead of other extreme consequences for their crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug and alcohol treatment as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eradicate other consequences from the crime, but could decrease the severity of such penalties to some large degree. Particularly if the person willingly participates in drug and alcohol rehab and is also a first-time offender. Studies show that a large percentage of people who do receive drug rehab for a DUI/DWI offense avoid the court system for similar charges down the road.
