Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own personal challenges can be treated in treatment.
