Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each person so that their own personal problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
