Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their particular challenges can be remedied in rehab.
