Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their own problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
