Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their particular problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
