Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each individual to ensure their unique challenges can be addressed in rehab.
