Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own challenges can be addressed in treatment.
