Sadly, the simple truth is that tens of millions of people actually choose to drive a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Doing this not just puts one's life at risk and puts passengers and others in danger as well, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will almost always bring about severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and even time in jail. In many cases a person who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying drug abuse issue. The court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders alcohol and drug rehabilitation instead of other extreme penalties for their crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in drug rehabilitation as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eliminate other penalties from the crime, but can decrease the degree of such consequences to some large degree. Particularly if the person willingly participates in drug and alcohol rehab and is a first-time offender. Research indicates that a large proportion of folks who do receive drug treatment because of a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the court system for comparable charges later on.
