Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
