Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal challenges can be remedied in rehab.
