Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions in order that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs.
