Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each individual so that their unique challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
