Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
