Offering gender-specific rehabilitation services has shown to be beneficial in situations where standard rehabilitation settings have fallen short, for example coping with situations in the women's life that are distinctive and traumatic. Such issues may have to do with sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family and motherhood, or another serious issues that happen to be particular to women. Studies show that women can also become involved in drug use more readily than men, and so are more vulnerable to illness as a result of dependency issues than males consequently. Because of duties in their home, women also tend to put off looking for and receiving care for addiction, a circumstance which can lead to disaster. Being mindful of this, rehabilitation services for women are created to ensure that a women's needs will be the focus and priority. Similar to coed programs, drug rehabilitation facilities which provide rehabilitation services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a first step. After this step, counselors help women target both general and gender-specific concerns who have triggered their drug or alcohol use. Women also may take advantage of the positive support from their female peers, and some centers that provide rehab services to women provide client beds for their kids.
