Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their unique problems can be handled in rehab.
