Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure their own challenges can be treated in rehab.
