Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
