Offering gender-specific treatment services has proven very useful in circumstances where conventional rehabilitation facilities have fallen short, like dealing with situations in the women's life which are distinctive and traumatic. Such concerns may relate to sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family and motherhood, or any other really serious issues which are specific to women. Research has revealed that women can also get involved in abusing drugs more readily than men, and therefore are more vulnerable to illness due to addiction problems than males as a result. Because of obligations in their home, women also tend to postpone searching for and receiving care for addiction, a circumstance which can be a catalyst for catastrophe. With this in mind, treatment services for women are designed so that a women's needs will be the focus and priority. Similar to coed programs, alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs which offer rehabilitation services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a first step. Following this step, counselors help women concentrate on both general and gender specific concerns which may have induced their drug abuse. Women also may take advantage of the constructive support from their female peers, and several facilities that provide treatment services to women also provide client beds for her young children.
