Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own challenges can be treated in rehab.
