Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their particular problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
