Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each person so that their own challenges can be treated in treatment.
