Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure their particular challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
