Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each individual so that their own personal problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
