Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse.
