Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for each person to ensure their own problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
