Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals comprehend the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure that their unique challenges can be remedied in rehab.
