Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
