Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their own problems can be remedied in rehab.
