Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be treated in rehab.
