Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each person to ensure that their unique problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
