Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
