Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure their unique challenges can be treated in treatment.
