Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services have to be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each individual so that their unique challenges can be remedied in treatment.
