Hearing impaired men and women generally have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their unique problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
