Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their unique problems can be treated in treatment.
