Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
