Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
