Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their unique problems can be treated in treatment.
