Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened chance of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own problems can be addressed in rehab.
