Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own personal problems can be remedied in treatment.
