Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
