Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their own personal challenges can be remedied in rehab.
