Sadly, it is a fact that tens of millions of people actually choose to drive a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Doing this not merely puts one's life at risk and puts passengers at risk as well, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will usually cause serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, fines and in many cases time in jail. Sometimes a person who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying drug abuse problem. A legal court system knows this, and it is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug treatment instead of other severe penalties for crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in alcohol and drug rehabilitation as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eradicate other consequences from the crime, but could decrease the degree of such penalties to a large degree. Specifically if the person willingly participates drug and alcohol rehab and is also a first time offender. Studies have shown that a large percentage of folks who do receive alcohol and drug rehab for a DUI/DWI offense avoid the court system for comparable charges down the road.
