Sadly, it is a fact that millions of people choose to operate a vehicle while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. Doing so not only puts one's life at risk and puts passengers at risk as well, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will usually bring about serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and in many cases time in jail. Often times someone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately has an underlying substance abuse challenge. A legal court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug rehabilitation as an alternative to other serious consequences for his or her crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug and alcohol rehabilitation as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eliminate other consequences from the crime, but could decrease the severity of such consequences to a large degree. Specifically if the person willingly participates in alcohol and drug treatment and is a first-time offender. Research indicates that a large proportion of those who do receive drug and alcohol rehabilitation for a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the courts for similar charges in the future.
