Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal challenges can be remedied in rehab.
