Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol.
